“Chopsticks are one of the reasons the Chinese never invented custard.” Spike Milligan’s joke has elements both of the exotic and the ridiculous; not surprising as he was born a hundred years ago in India, into a soldier’s family, and later lived in Burma (Myanamar). His best-loved creation, the Goon Show, often seemed to draw on experience of blimpish army officers, procrastinating Indian bureaucrats, naïve schoolboys and a patronising attitude to other races.
